Start-Up and ExSite are the council’s exercise referral schemes for inactive Cambridge residents with medical conditions, whose health would benefit from leading a more active lifestyle. Each scheme lasts 12 weeks, during which time you can access the Start-Up or ExSite facilities at a reduced rate.
The Start Up and ExSite schemes differ in that they are aimed at individuals with slightly different needs. Otherwise the referral process is the same for both schemes. Participants are also offered some choice over which centre they exercise at.
They are run by qualified exercise consultants with the expertise to ensure that participants are prescribed the right type of physical activity to benefit their health. To ensure that there is something to suit everyone, a wide range of activities are available.
Health professionals register, and then are able to refer patients who would benefit from increasing their physical activity and exercise levels to the Start Up scheme, which offers a comprehensive consultation, followed by an individualised programme of activity.
Supervised sessions are available at the Abbey along with other exercise sessions and alternative facilities across Cambridge.
Anyone who lives or attends a doctor's surgery in the city can be accepted on the scheme. Referral is from your GP.
