Other or former names: RNIB, Royal National Institute for the Blind

Description

The UK’s leading charity (and membership organisation) offering information, support and advice to over two million people with sight problems.

Its pioneering work helps anyone with a sight problem – not just with braille, Talking Books and computer training, but with imaginative and practical solutions to everyday challenges.

It fights for equal rights for people with sight problems. It funds pioneering research into preventing and treating eye disease. Its projects such as Talk and Support and Parents’ Place make a difference to people’s lives.

The Helpline offers an immediate, expert and confidential service. Many of the Helpline staff have sight problems themselves. They are trained to listen and to give reassurance and advice. Its staff can: put you in touch with specialist advice services; give you details of support groups and services in your area.

They can also provide you with free information on: eye conditions; making the most of your remaining vision - magnifiers, lighting; registering as blind or partially sighted; benefits and your rights; living with sight loss; Interpreters can be arranged for most languages. All calls are treated in confidence.

You can visit their Resource Centre in London for sales and advice about products. The Research Library has computers for surfing the internet. The Low Vision Centre and Children’s Centre are also located in London.

They have a very comprehensive website.
