Other or former names: Student Community Action - Volunteers in Cambridge, Cambridge SCA, SCA, Student Community Action Sitting In Service, BSMEG, Big Siblings, Bounce, Sunday Club, Taskforce, TESL
An independent local charity, which recruits and places student volunteers from Anglia Ruskin University (formally known as Anglia Polytechnic University) and the University of Cambridge, in any one of dozens of projects in Cambridge. Each year volunteers giving thousands of hours to improve the lives of people living in the local community.
BIG SIBLINGS PROJECT
Volunteers are paired with the child of a lone parent, a child where there is a disabled member of the family, or with a child who has a disability. This project gives children a chance to get to know another adult outside the family, and gives both parent and child a break from each other. Volunteers enjoy the opportunity to meet people in a relaxed home environment, escape the pressures of University life for a while, and have the perfect excuse to enjoy childhood pleasures again. Group activities are arranged, or you can take your little sib out to the local playground, go swimming, bike riding, walking, feeding the ducks, etc., or even just watch TV with them.
SITTING-IN SERVICE
There is a sitting-in service for lone parent families, or those where one of the parents or children has a disability. Once they are matched with a family, volunteers provide a sitting-in service for them once a week or fortnight. The break provided by our volunteers is often the only one the parent(s) get. All homes are visited when a family registers for sitters.
SCA BOUNCE!
The Bounce project aims to provide a range of sporting opportunities to children who may have difficulty accessing them for a variety of reasons. Volunteers work with a group of disadvantaged children to give them experiences that they would not normally have access to, such as climbing, archery, trampolining, football, basketball or short tennis.
Some of the children involved may have learning, behavioural or physical disabilities and so need a little extra help to get involved.
The majority of sessions take place at Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall. These activities are only available to families in Cambridge or close by. Be advised there is normally a waiting list for all these services.
