Description

The UK's leading learning disability charity working with people with a learning disability and their families and carers. It campaigns, fundraises and provides support. Support includes housing (in flats, houses, or a registered care home), education and employment (including the Essential Skills Award), community (one to one advice and personal support)and leisure and sport.

Their website has an Accommodation Finder service, a community support finder service and 'AskMencap' with some useful factsheets. It is well worth visiting.

Mencap Sport was launched in 2005 when Mencap took over the work of the English Sports Association for People with Learning Disability. It supports elite athletes with a learning disability who represent England and Great Britain in competitions around the world up to Paralympic level. It works with Special Olympics and other organisations to promote opportunities in sport at all levels for people with a learning disability. It does this by running national championships and competitions; running training days for elite athletes; and supporting national governing bodies of sport and other organisations.

Mencap has local branches including one in Cambridge.

Their website helps you find all local groups and organisations (including statutory services) relevant to learning disability in the county but it is tricky to find out which ones are Mencap run. Do let them know which ones they should link to.
